| Abstract: |
O-Glycosyl hydrolases (EC 3.2.1.-) are a widespread group of enzymes that hydrolyse the glycosidic bond between two or more carbohydrates, or between a carbohydrate and a non-carbohydrate moiety. A classification system for glycosyl hydrolases, based on sequence similarity, has led to the definition of 85 different families [PMID:7624375, PMID:8535779, PUB00005672]. This classification is available on the CAZy (CArbohydrate-Active EnZymes) web site [PUB00007032]. Because the fold of proteins is better conserved than their sequences, some of the families can be grouped in 'clans'. Because the fold of proteins is better conserved than their sequences, some of the families can be grouped in 'clans'. Glycoside hydrolase family 31 CAZY: GH_31 comprises enzymes with several known activities; alpha-glucosidase (EC: 3.2.1.20), alpha-galactosidase (EC: 3.2.1.22); glucoamylase (EC: 3.2.1.3), sucrase-isomaltase (EC: 3.2.1.48) (EC: 3.2.1.10); alpha-xylosidase (EC: 3.2.1.-); alpha-glucan lyase (EC: 4.2.2.13). Glycoside hydrolase family 31 groups a number of glycosyl hydrolases on the basis of sequence similarities [PMID:1747104, PMID:1761061, PMID:1743281] An aspartic acid has been implicated [PMID:1856189] in the catalytic activity of sucrase, isomaltase, and lysosomal alpha-glucosidase. |
